RECRUITING PROCESS2 min read

Why do some athletes with less talent get more offers?

Coaches recruit from lists. The athletes who get on them run a simple process, again and again.

The short answer

Because recruiting isn’t just about talent.

Same sport, same class year. One gets seen, one doesn’t — and the gap is almost never what happened on the court.

MYTH
“If I’m good enough, they’ll find me.”
REALITY
Coaches work from a list. If you’re not on one, you’re not in the conversation.

MORE TALENTNO OFFERS

Waited to be found.

  • No target list
  • No outreach

What coaches check

Coaches look at the whole athlete

Eight things a staff checks before an offer is ever discussed.

  1. Can you play?

Real, current ability at the level you’re targeting.
  2. Are your academics in order?

GPA, core courses and test plan — this cuts lists fast.
  3. Do you have quality film?

Short, recent, easy to watch. Your best work first.
  4. Are you contacting the right schools?

Fit by division, roster need, region and academics.
  5. Are you responsive?

Replies that come back in hours, not weeks.
  6. Do coaches know who you are?

A name they recognize beats a name they have to look up.
  7. Do you fit what they need?

Right position, right class year, right roster gap.
  8. Are you showing up consistently?

Steady effort over months — not one great week.

The process

How athletes recruit themselves

Five repeatable steps. Start them early, keep them going.

Rules varyState, age or school rules most often come up here. Playbook 23 spots the issue — a licensed professional answers it.

  1. 1 Build the profile

One clean page: position, class year, height, academics, contact. Keep it current.

Athletes aiming at D1 or D2 are often asked for an NCAA ID so coaches can find them. Which divisions require registration, and how D3 differs, is a question for your counselor or coach.

  2. 2 Build the list

Twenty to thirty real-fit schools across divisions — reach, match and safety.
  3. 3 Send the film

A short highlight link sent directly to the coach who recruits your area.
  4. 4 Start the conversations

A brief, specific note. Why that school, why you, what’s next.
  5. 5 Follow up

Update after every season — new film, new grades, new results.
